Making Schools Safe for the Environment

The world is becoming more aware of the drastic effects of pollution and global warming. Humans are still on the process of converting into a more sustainable way of living despite being able to learn about the catastrophic events that may possibly occur due to environmental conditions at an earlier period.

In Hong Kong, the special administrative region’s Environment Bureau and Environmental Protection Department has adapted the Green Management System where it aims to improve the environmental impacts of their office operations. This is through energy saving, reduction of fossil fuel, recycling, and the likes.

With the efforts of the government, it is safe to say that students should also be exposed as early as possible to environmental awareness. With this, environmentally friendly schools are definitely a must.

Here are ways to slowly make the shift in schools.

  1. Recycle

Recycle old papers and make use of them in the future. These can be in the form of making recycled papers, for school activities, or even as a learning reference that can be passed down to different students. It is also essential to recycle other items that can be reused.

  1. Develop environmental awareness

It is important for students to be aware of the environmental impacts. Students should develop eco-literacy and leadership skills so they can spread the awareness inside and outside the classroom.

  1. Using environmentally friendly appliances

Proper ventilation is needed for students to be able to induce learning. However, air-conditioners can be quite inefficient. With this, schools should invest in appliances, such as air-conditioners which are more efficient for the environment.

  1. Be aware

Most schools do not audit their sustainability. This makes them unaware of the amount of damage that they are doing to the environment. With this, whole school sustainability audits are needed to determine problem areas and possible resolutions.
